Artistic Productions

Art is a universal language that can speak to people from different cultural and social class backgrounds. Everyone is interested in some form of art, so it can function as a bridge to understanding experiences outside of our personal frame of reference.

Students at the Howard University had the opportunity to reflect on this time period we are currently experiencing  by creating projects that focus on a specific artistic production from the African Diaspora.

Exploring Afro-Brazilian Culture

Experiencing a new culture first hand can open a person up to new perspectives and develop cultural competency.

Students at the Howard University had the opportunity to learn about Afro-Brazilian culture by participating in experiential learning experiences related to food, music, and dance.

Race & Politics

The 2020 U.S. Presidential election, summer marches for racial justice, and debates on how to deal with COVID highlight how politics has become a central part of our lives.

Students at the Howard University had the opportunity to reflect on this time period we are currently experiencing  by creating projects that focus on the pressing political issues that impact communities within the African Diaspora.

Language, Food, & Identity

Food plays a central role in our lives from providing nourishment, symbols of holiday traditions, and markers of cultural or ethnic identity.

Students at Howard University had the opportunity to reflect on different foodways that are important to the African Diaspora by creating projects that focus on food traditions important to them or their families. They shared these recipes in Portuguese as way to learn how to share food traditions important to them with people from other cultures.

Cordel Literature

Literatura de cordel, or cordel literature, is a poetic tradition from Northeast Brazil that dates back to the 19th century. The name of the genre comes from chapbooks being hung on a cordel, or string at markets where they were sold. It is an epic poetic form that incorporates African, Indigenous, and European elements. Cordel literature is an important oral tradition that is used to record important historical events, share stories of important historical figures, folk tales, and even religious stories.

Howard University students in the HU Portuguese Program had the opportunity to write their own cordel poems on historical figures and topics related to the African Diaspora. They created multimodal projects that incorporated images and videos to add another layer to their poems.
